Wedding Dress Shopping – 3 things to know

Wedding Dress Shopping

One of the first thing that many brides do is getting down to the bridal shop and trying on a few dresses! It is such an exciting time, but can also be an overwhelming and frustrating time. Here are a 3 things to think about when you head out for one of the most memorable shopping trips of your life.

Keep the excursion small

1. Forget the Entourage

A lot of brides fall into the trap of taking too many people with them when they go to pick out their dress. There is no magic number for this shopping trip (you're comfortable with who you're comfortable with!). It is a good idea to keep it small though. You want to invite people who will be supportive of whatever you want, but honest with their opinions. But too many honest opinions? Can be daunting.

We suggest inviting 2 or 3. One or two best friends, sisters or cousins and your mum. Having said, not everyone's mother is supportive of what YOU want. So really, invite who you're going to be comfortable with and who will tell the truth but help you find what YOU want.

2. Do some research

Have an idea of what you want going into the shopping adventure. We've said it once or twice already, but wedding dress shopping is overwhelming! There are so many different styles, cuts, fabrics and colours (when it comes to wedding dresses there are many, many types of white!).

There are also pushy salespeople who will put you in the princess ballgown despite you showing them a picture of a slinky, sexy sheath dress. You may find that you are happy to branch out from what you want. But there is helping you to branch out, and forcing you to a whole other forest!

Also, be ready for your mother to tear up when she sees you in that princess dress and to be crushed when you ask for it to be taken away!

3. Don't play beyond your budget

Sticking to your dress budget can be hard. Most boutiques will be respectful of your price limit and not suggest much beyond it. But then you see the Vera Wang or Anna Campbell... Suddenly you're right back to 5 year old you playing dress up! But also falling in love with something that will break the bank (and your heart!).

There are so many beautiful dresses available for a portion of these designer prices. You just have to be patient.

Remember that there will be a number of extras that you'll need to shell out for with that dress. You'll probably need alterations, special underwear, shoes and a veil. It all adds up very quickly.

Don't forget, as overwhelming as Wedding Dress Shopping can be, it is still a magical time to enjoy with your loved ones. Do your research, pick your (small) crew and be firm with budget. But mostly, enjoy this beautiful time.
